Maybe it’s the dozens of avalanche chutes, or the extraordinary cost, or the loss of incredible habitat, that makes you question whether building a road between Juneau and Skagway is in the public’s best interest. If so, you’re not alone. The majority of residents in Juneau, Skagway, Haines, and Alaska oppose replacing the ferry service in the Lynn Canal with a road.
Despite the overwhelming opposition and exorbitant costs, Alaska’s Governor Frank Murkowski continues to push the road. Here’s how you can help stop the Juneau Road.
Write to decision makers or friends on an amusing postcard. Let your opinion be known with a bumper sticker proclaiming “Why extend the dead end? Ferries go all the way.”

The project, currently estimated at $250 million and bound to go up, will require a significant contribution from the state legislature to move forward. Urge your state legislators to spend state money on the real needs of Alaskans – from fully funding education to plowing our existing roads – not on extending a dead end.

Already Congress has set aside $15 million for the Juneau Road. The project will likely require even more federal funding, at the expense of other critical transportation needs in Alaska and indeed. Ask your members of Congress not to put any more money into a project that is literally going nowhere.

The Alaska Department of Transportation is slated to release a Final Environmental Impact Statement on the Juneau Access Improvements Project this winter. Currently, DOT has said they will only allow for 30 days of public review despite the fact that the department has chosen a completely new alternative (a 50 mile road from Juneau ending at the Katzehin River) that the public has not yet seriously considered or commented on. Urge the state to extend the comment period to 90 days by writing to:
Rueben Yost
ADOT&PF
6860 Glacier Highway
Juneau, AK 99081
Check this website or call (907) 209-0082 to learn more about the upcoming comment period and public meetings. Review previous studies and DOT documents at http://juneauaccess.alaska.gov.
